frequently asked questions
Is Osteopathic treatment effective?
Yes. Osteopaths are trained professionals who know the working function of the body particularly regarding the musculoskeletal system (muscles, joints, ligaments etc) and the way it relates to the body as a whole.
With this knowledge they can pinpoint the underlining cause of the problem and employ various techniques that alleviate pain and discomfort to stimulate the bodies natural healing process to cure or minimise the condition.
Does the treatment hurt?
Care is always taken with the patient to establish the cause and level of any pain or discomfort being experienced. From this the Osteopath can usually determine the region where the problem exists by observation or gentle touch and manipulation. The best technique is then employed to alleviate any pain or discomfort, which can include using acupuncture needles.
Depending on the condition there is usually little or no discomfort during treatment and in most cases a positive change is experienced within a short period of time after treatment. In cases where stimulation of the region has to be applied in order to trigger the natural healing properties of the body, some discomfort may be experienced afterwards, but this usually diminishes within 2 to 3 days.
Every treatment is tailored to keep any discomfort to a bear minimum and the patient’s well-being is always considered during and after every treatment.
How many treatments will be needed?
This will be mainly determined by the particular condition and how quickly the client responds to treatment. Typically this ranges from 3 to 6 sessions and will be assessed after each treatment. There is usually a period of one week between each treatment so as to give the body enough time to heal. Only the appropriate number of treatments will be advised.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can approach the Osteopath directly for a consultation. Some medical insurance companies may ask for a GP referral before treatment starts, so it advisable to liaise with the insurer first. Letters of diagnoses can be provided on request for GPs or insurance companies.
Are there any restrictions on who can be treated?
Not usually. A whole range of patients can be treated from adults, pregnant ladies, babies and children to the elderly.
