Case of the Month
At the beginning of the month a 21-year-old man presented at the practice with a rather extraordinary history. At the age of 15 he fell out of a tree, fracturing his spine at the lower neck and mid back. Although his recovery was excellent, he had been left with deep tissue scarring and restrictions in his spine, due to the lack of manual therapy treatment at the time. In the years that followed, he began work at the local funeral directors. This involved heavy lifting over long distances, which eventually led to continual pain, stiffness and soreness in his mid back and neck.
During the initial examination the restrictions in his spine were noted and areas previously damaged were recorded. I then began work loosening muscle tissue and increasing the range of movement. After his first visit he reported a dramatic reduction in pain and was also able to sleep more comfortably. We talked about exercises he could do to support long-term improvement and I also showed him how to lift more efficiently and safely at work. After only three treatments he had no pain at all and was able to return back to work. With only a little more work to do, we are confident that there is little chance of pain returning in the near future. Whilst this patient will always have to be careful with his back, he certainly has no reason to give up work.
